Tsiknopempti - Grilling day or Meat Day
Tsiknopempti
If you know Cypriots, you know their love for grilling runs deep—so it’s no surprise that Tsiknopempti is one of the most anticipated days of the year. Celebrated on a Thursday during the Carnival period, it marks the start of the final week in which Greek Orthodox Christians can enjoy meat before Lent. On this day, the air is filled with the irresistible aroma of barbecues as families, friends, and entire neighbourhoods fire up their grills. The name Tsiknopempti comes from the word “tsikna,” referring to the delicious smell of cooked meat that fills the streets. In Cyprus, it’s also known as “sikoses,” from the Greek verb sikono, meaning “I rise,” symbolising the lively spirit and festive mood of the day.
